“It’s happened to a lot of us: you pride yourself on healthy eating; you drink superfood smoothies, eat dark leafy greens or a hearty chickpea salad, and yet somehow another, a bloated stomach appears, causing you to unbutton your pants and sit down.Bloating isn’t as surprising when you eat foods you know aren’t good for you, but it can be a feeling incredibly frustrating when you’re doing your best to eat healthy,” nutritionist Bhakti Arora Kapoor wrote in her recent Instagram post.

“The intestine is made up of billions of microflora that maintain your health – they support the immune system, help with weight loss, prevent disease and improve your mood. Bloating is commonly associated with poor digestion, poor diet and to an overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the gut, but sometimes even healthy eating habits can lead to that unwanted bulge,” Kapoor adds.

Also, some vegetables can cause gas and bloating and people who have this tendency should avoid them.

“Some healthy foods, such as cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, can cause bloating due to their high content of indigestible sugars that can ferment in the gut and cause gas,” Kapoor says.

The nutritionist adds that you have to get to the root of the discomfort.

Kapoor opens up on why you’re always bloated

1. Snacking all day: It interferes with something called your migrant motor complex (mmc)

2. Not eating enough: This is a stressor for your body, which ultimately means digestion is slowed or stopped, which increases bloating.

3. Stress: When you’re in a sympathetic state, digestion is dramatically slowed or even stopped, increasing bloat.

4. Daily HIIT workouts: This adds more stress, which means your body will get stuck in fight and flight mode, digestion will be slowed, and bloating will increase.

5. Poor quality sleep: Sleep is a major foundation of health…impacts all physiological processes in the body, allows time for rest and recovery processes in your body, can improve intestinal motility and constipation, etc.

6. Eat quickly: Chewing begins the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food – the more you can physically break down food with your teeth, the less you work on the rest of your digestive system, which will lead to less bloating. Chew your food 15 to 30 times.
