Optum Health hosts summer parties in June, inviting the community to health and wellness activities and information sessions.

LAYTON — By 2060, nearly 95 million Americans age 65 and older are expected to populate the country. That’s a 23% increase from the year 2018, according to census.gov.

“Focusing on the health and well-being of seniors will only grow in importance,” said Joshua Mattern, public relations manager for Optum Health in Utah. “At the same time, as we age, our risk of contracting serious illnesses and disabilities, having physical accidents, suffering serious complications and losing our independence from them also gradually increases.”

At its three community centers in Layton, West Valley and Sandy, Optum holds summer parties in June, inviting the community to health and wellness activities and information sessions.

Mattern said community centers have fitness equipment, expert-led wellness classes and doctor-led health information sessions, all open to the community free of charge.

“Optum likes to be partners in the communities we serve, so whether you’re part of Optum or not, you’re invited to attend summer parties and even weekly activities,” said Jim Tett, Chief Operating Officer of Optum. the mobile clinic for Optum Utah. .

Tett said the centers offer everything from zumba, pilates and yoga to games, crafts and recipe classes.

“One thing that helps people’s health is social interaction with others,” Tett said. “Being lonely and depressed can become a problem for the aging population. The kids have moved away, maybe a spouse has died, or maybe the family isn’t nearby. Getting involved with others can really benefit your health.

Tett said a unique part of the centers is a lifestyle class offered once a week in which people can reminisce about their lives, tell their stories and share their experiences with each other. The exercise classes are even adapted to each person’s situation.

“If someone has a balance problem, we will adapt this exercise to help improve their balance, for example,” he said. “Anyone aged 55 and over is invited to come and take advantage of the things offered in the centers for free. There are no memberships, fees or registrations.

The Layton Center will hold its summer party on Thursday. Two sessions are offered at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. The center is located at 2146 N. Main St., Suite 514. For more information and hours, go to optumcare.com/utcenters.
