Jasleen Kaur, registered dietitian and nutritionist, says that more than anything else, it’s a great source of protein. “Everyone misses protein these days. It is high in protein and good for weight loss,” she told indianexpress.com, adding, “It is also very good for people who go to the gym a lot. If taken daily, it can promote bone health and relieve joint pain. Just be sure to keep salt levels a bit low so you don’t raise your blood pressure.
She also advises that if you suffer from a cold or a cough, a few easy additions can also make this soup a cure. “Add gingergarlic and cloves to your chicken soup to get rid of phlegm or congestion,” she explained.
Remya Rajan, consultant nutritionist from Bengaluru, agrees that a simple chicken soup can be very nutritious and beneficial. “Chicken soup has amino acids that resemble the properties of drugs used to fight infections such as bronchitis. The carnosine and cysteine present in the broth help thin the mucus. But to retain the carnosine effect, we must consume soup several times a day,” she shared with indianexpress.com.
She added that chicken is also high in the amino acid tryptophan, which helps your body produce serotonin, and can improve your mood and make you feel “comfortable”. If you prepare the soup with the skin of the chicken, it is a good source of nutrients rich in carbohydrates, proteins and fats, and therefore, it becomes a meal replacement and a hearty dinner. She adds that the gelatin in the bones, when boiled properly, is rich in many nutrients and also helps protect the inner lining of the digestive tract. It therefore also has an intestinal healing property.
So the next time you’re feeling down, grab a hot bowl of soup to chase away the blues!
