Healthy skin cannot be miraculously achieved overnight! On the contrary, it takes a lot of time and the right techniques and products to achieve beautiful skin over a period of time. As such, it is advisable to pay attention to your skin while you’re still young so you don’t make mistakes that could cost you dearly in the future. Dermatologist Dr. Kiran Shetty listed three things that should be included in the skin care regimen while you’re young.

“Each of my patients came with a major problem skin care mistake that I had to fix and I can’t help but wonder about the top things we all should have known or at least been aware of at a younger age to make better choices when it comes to our skin” , she wrote in her Instagram post.

The expert listed three things to focus on: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

cleaner

It is important to keep the face clean and at the same time it is equally important to maintain a healthy skin barrier. “Use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t disrupt the skin barrier. Also, don’t over-exfoliate or use harsh facial cleansers. Gentle cleansing lotions are best unless you’re prone to acne,” she said.

According to the previous post of dermatologist Dr Aanchal Panth, people with dry or normal skin should exfoliate once a month while those with oily to combination skin should do it twice a month. “Don’t use scrub solutions if you have sensitive skin,” she warned.

moisturizer

Moisturizing with the right product containing the right ingredients helps repair and maintain the skin barrier. Dr. Kiran advised to keep the skin barrier strong as it creates a protective layer on the skin. It is suggested to go through the ingredient list before making a purchase. A person with acne-prone skin should opt for an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer that contains tea tree oil or salicylic acid.

Sun screen

The importance of applying sunscreen cannot be overstated, considering the benefits it has on our skin. It should be applied every day, regardless of the weather, season or if you are in the sun or inside your home. “It’s super important. I’ve been wearing sunscreen since I was 12,” Dr. Kiran said in his Instagram video.

Ideally, you should choose a mineral sunscreen rather than a chemical cream because chemical sunscreens be absorbed into our bloodstream while mineral or physical sunscreen simply sits on the skin and acts as a shield. People who have sensitive or acne-prone skin are advised to apply physical sunscreen rather than chemical sunscreen. “Wear mineral sunscreen whether you’re indoors or outdoors,” she added.
